Hello!
My name is Kayla Brookins, and as a doula I am dedicated to providing holistic support to expecting and new parents, focusing on emotional, educational, and spiritual guidance. My mission is to prepare families for the transformative journey of childbirth and parenthood, supporting a nurturing and empowering experience.
My Story
I have been studying and preparing for birth work since 2017. While I initially wanted to work with birthing people as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), after my first semester of nursing school, I knew the clinical route was not for me. I truly and deeply believe in physiologic birth: that your body knows how to birth, it was built to birth, that no one knows better than you how to birth your baby. My goal as your doula is to encourage you to listen and follow the guidance coming from within yourself and from your baby to have the most empowered birthing experience and introduction to parenthood possible. I feel deeply called to this work, and I would be honored to walk with you on your pregnancy and postpartum journeys.
I received my training to be a birth doula, postpartum doula, and peer lactation counselor from the Maternity Care Coalition in Philadelphia, PA.
My Core Values
I believe...
that YOU are the expert of your own body and your baby.
that birth is a natural, physiological human process and endeavor.
that when families are informed and supported in their decisions, they feel confident, self-assured, and empowered to choose what is right for them during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum.
My Mission
I am here to hold non-judgemental space for parents throughout their childbearing year and during their introduction to parenthood. All of your thoughts, feelings, questions, doubts, etc. will be held lovingly and given space for you to explore, so that you may learn more about your own being and how that will translate into your labor experience and parenting style.
I am here to share evidence-based information with parents so that they have trusted information from which to make informed decisions for their labors, births, and parenting journeys.
I am here to help connect parents with community resources that may hold and support them through pregnancy, labor, and postpartum.
My Philosophy
Labor and birth are at once entirely physical and spiritual experiences. Labor is indeed hard work, demanding hours of the most concentrated human effort. At the same time, the laboring person is undergoing an intense spiritual transformation, going deeper into themselves than ever before, moving beyond whatever limits they previously believed themselves beholden to, and entering into an awareness of oneness with the Universe as they physically embody a threshold between realms. The duality of these experiences is what I will be holding for you as your doula and encouraging you to explore throughout your pregnancy journey. The postpartum time is intended for deep rest and repair as the birthing person comes fully back into this plane and begins the work of re-learning who they are in this new role as Mother/Parent.
My Vision
To be an uplifting support for families, encouraging them and holding them as they navigate the varied transitions of the childbearing year and postpartum period, while growing in their self-confidence and self-assurance and listening, ever more astutely, to their inner knowings.
My Role As Your Doula
I will walk beside you as you journey through the sacred openings, expansions, and contractions of the childbearing year, as you integrate the largest hormonal shifts you will ever experience, as you move through massive identity shifts and begin to re-meet yourself and re-learn who you are, as you meet the individual soul you have helped create and welcomed into this world.
I am a support you may lean on as you navigate these shifts and find that, through it all, you already have everything you need within yourself to find your way.
