Hello! My name is Kayla Brookins, and I have been studying and preparing for birth work since 2017. While I initially wanted to work with birthing people as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), after my first semester of nursing school, I knew the clinical route was not for me. I truly and deeply believe in physiologic birth: that your body knows how to birth, it was built to birth, that no one knows better than you how to birth your baby. My goal as your doula is to encourage you to listen and follow the guidance coming from within yourself and from your baby to have the most empowered birthing experience and introduction to parenthood possible. I feel deeply called to this work, and I would be honored to walk with you on your pregnancy and postpartum journeys.
I received my training to be a birth doula, postpartum doula, and peer lactation counselor from the Maternity Care Coalition in Philadelphia, PA.
The sacred openings of pregnancy are expressed in the gradual expansions that take place: expansion of your heart as you grow in love for your baby, expansion of your mind as you begin to consider your baby's needs in addition to your own, expansion of your uterus as you create more physical space for Baby within your own being.
Labor and Birth are the peaks of expansion and sacred openings within the childbearing year. Your cervix will physically open as you become the tangible and spiritual door between realms - you will become the threshold as you and your baby work together to bring them fully into this physical plane. Your body and spirit will be wide open as you straddle the spiritual plane and the earthly realm, engaging in the most quintessentially human endeavor of childbirth.
Here, the sacred openings of labor & birth are coming to a close, while the sacred openings that began in pregnancy are exponentially increasing. As you move through postpartum (for the first and subsequent times), your heart will continue to expand with love for your baby, your mind can be so expansive as to almost feel single-mindedly focused on your newborn, and while your womb will be closing, contracting back down to its pre-pregnancy size, your breasts will be expanding with milk to nourish your baby. Your life, identity, and relationship with your partner will all expand to include your baby and will continue to do so as you all grow together.
I will walk beside you as you journey through these sacred openings, expansions, and contractions, as you integrate the largest hormonal shifts you will ever experience, as you move through massive identity shifts and begin to re-meet yourself and re-learn who you are, as you meet the individual soul you have helped create and welcomed into this world.
I am a support you may lean on as you navigate these shifts and find that, through it all, you already have everything you need within yourself to find your way.
Labor and birth are at once entirely physical and spiritual experiences. Labor is indeed hard work, demanding hours of the most concentrated human effort. At the same time, the laboring person is undergoing an intense spiritual transformation, going deeper into themselves than ever before, moving beyond whatever limits they previously believed themselves beholden to, and entering into an awareness of oneness with the Universe as they physically embody a threshold between realms. The duality of these experiences is what I will be holding for you as your doula and encouraging you to explore throughout your pregnancy journey. The postpartum time is intended for deep rest and repair as the birthing person comes fully back into this plane and begins the work of re-learning who they are in this new role as Mother/Parent.
